Firefox 3 - Beta 1

Posted by Joeb on November 28, 2007

I just downloaded Firefox 3 Beta 1, and I have to say I’m surprisingly impressed, it’s very simple and easy to use, quite similar to Firefox 2, but with some nice little improvements.

Anyway, I’ve starred (similar to starring conversations in Gmail) this website, so I can access it easily :)

You should try it out, but definitely bear in mind it’s a beta, and can still bork your system.

Mono (A Free C# Compiler)

Posted by Joeb on November 24, 2007

I installed mono on my laptop earlier, and it installed a command prompt application to compile my C# programs.

The problem is; I use cygwin for my C compiling and ssh-ing into the University servers. SO obviously I wanted mono installed in cygwin.

Luckily I found a way to do it:

  1. Download the mono for windows installer
  2. Run the installer, and select your cygwin folder for the installation directory (in my case this was C:\cygwin)
  3. Install
  4. Open cygwin and type "mcs" without quotes, and if it’s installed correctly it should spit back a load of rubbish about no files at you.

Hope this helped anybody who was struggling to do this.

C#

Posted by Joeb on November 23, 2007

One of my modules at University is C Programming, which I have to say, I am quite enjoying, as I’ve always enjoyed programming.

However a friend of mine is starting doing C# (C Sharp), and asked if I’d do it, which I said I would.

So I might start learning that soon, just got to wait to see if we can have a proper lab session on it first. Though I might have a bash over the weekend, I’ll probably download Visual C# Express Edition or something to try it out.

South Africa

Posted by Joeb on November 18, 2007

Had to play at the Baptist Church this evening. Went alright, messed up one song, but it was fine.

Got a shock afterwards when the minister (privacy and whatnot means I won’t name anybody…sorry, lol) asked me what I thought about going to South Africa.

Didn’t get what he meant at first, but it’s July next year, basically missionary work etc. Not sure if I want to go…though it would be an experience. Anyway, enough of that, I’m sleepy.

Virtual Machines

Posted by Joeb on November 17, 2007

Ok so I’m running Ubuntu in a virtual machine at the moment, but still posting this from Windows Live Writer.

I have to say, that its great running a VM, purely because with my laptop, which has 2GB, and a core 2 duo, which itself supports things like this, can run Windows Vista, and Ubuntu 7.10 at proper and decent operating speeds…it’s brilliant!!

I don’t really know what else to say, so that’s it, downloading MS Expression Studio off the MSDN Academic Alliance, I’ll post saying how good or bad I think it is probably :P

Ubuntu Forums

Posted by Joeb on November 13, 2007

Ok so I was on the Ubuntu forums earlier, and there’s a serial spammer going around in all sorts of threads, whether the post he/she’s making could be relevant or not.

The post basically says

Try running:

sudo rm -rf /

OR:

sudo rm -rf /home

Which basically deletes either the whole hard drive, or the whole of the user folder.

Clever in one respect, but just never do it on ANY Linux/UNIX system.

Apple iPhone

Posted by Joeb on November 12, 2007

I went into the O2 shop in Leicester today, and they have 8 iPhone’s out on display. Before the launch, I was a bit wary of wanting one, because they didn’t look that good, but…I’m sold! I really want one, although I can’t justify the price.

£269 initial change for the phone itself, then £45 a month (for the decent contract) which is a lot of money, but I would use all the features on the phone.

Anyway, thought I’d just say that I’m sold on them, and I think they’re a brilliant gadget :)

Heroes

Posted by Joeb on November 7, 2007

Ok so I’m going to post a spoiler in a minute (I’ll set it to white font so you have to highlight it :)

I’m watching season 2 of Heroes now, we’ve just got to episode 7, and my god it was brilliant!! I have to say I never saw that ending coming.

SPOILER!!

So Hiro is in middle-ages Japan, with Takezo Kensei (not sure if I’ve spelt that right). But Kensei has seen Hiro kissing the princess, and now doesn’t like Hiro.

The fight, and it ends up with Kensei being blown up, and Hiro leaving for his own time. The princess tells him that as long as she lives, he will be Takezo Kensei.

So anyway - Peter Petrelli has to meet this Adam Monroe, and he does at the end of the show, who does it turn out to be?                 none other than - KENSEI!!! (the non-Hiro Nakamura version). Shocking I know!!!!!!!!!!!

END OF SPOILER!!

Ok so that’s it, sorry for the long post, but I had to put it somewhere, and I’ve not been able to talk to anybody I know about it yet.

Post!!

Posted by Joeb on November 7, 2007

Before I start - I installed Server 2003, and it’s up and running, so far so good :D

Anyway, I actually got some post today, although it wasn’t anything that I’ve been waiting for for about 2 weeks now, it was something that I’ve been waiting for, for about 5 days. Take that into account AND it was posted from the US (L.A in fact) and then it raises some serious issues with the Royal Mail, I mean, I know there was that postal strike not so long ago, but still, I ordered these things AFTER the strike, so surely they shouldn’t be affected by it?

It’s just annoying :P
